Crystal Waters: Northern Patagonian Lake Region

Volcan Osorno is the emoji of volcanoes Back on mainland Chile on NYE we continued to Puerto Varas to find someplace to have dinner by Lago Llanquihue to gaze out towards the most quintessential looking volcano, Osorno. Unfortunately, it was a cloudy evening and most restaurants actually close for NYE, with the remaining ones clearly booking up well in advance. In the end, we found that we could "sneak" into a nice place by going early, eating quickly before someone else's reservation and leaving to find some NYE dessert elsewhere! And though we didn't stay awake until midnight, a decent fireworks display woke us up, which was a pleasant surprise. From Puerto Varas we drove around the lake and up to Volcano Osorno - the best views were while driving around the lake as clouds covered the peak by the time we made it onto the volcano. Climbing Cotopaxi, Easier than Returning to Quito

Cotopaxi is one of the tallest active volcanoes in the world. A short distance from Quito, this snow capped volcano rises to over 5,800 meters. Cotopaxi last erupted in August 2015, and it was closed for climbing until October 2017. Good timing on our part. We left Quito early Friday morning with our two guides (Reese and Patricio) and 18 other tourists. Just outside the national park we stopped for breakfast at a small restaurant where they served a meal worthy of climbing a volcano. We had fresh pineapple juice, coffee, pancakes topped with granola/yogurt, bread/jam, and scrambled eggs. At breakfast we ended up sitting with a bunch of people on our tour, one of which happened to be our next door neighbor from the Upper East Side. She lived a block away from our former apartment, small world. Chiloé: The Mystical Island off of Chile

After seeing so many dome cabins we finally stayed in one in Parque Tantauco, Chiloé On Christmas day (yes, we are still catching up on posts) we planned to ferry to the island of Chiloé. As this was Christmas, and South America as a whole is a very religious continent, we had concerns about the schedule, which is only twice a week (Tuesdays and Saturdays). So not being able to ferry over would have completely thrown off our plans, but luckily not only did the ferry depart as scheduled, but it also ended up only being a four hour ferry that was advertised as six hours.
